Macy's

Macy's: A True American Icon
macys store in the mall

Macy's is perhaps one of the most famous brands of all time. It is the focal point of the classic Christmas film Miracle on 34th Street, and the company behind the Thanksgiving Day Parade that tops ratings for its time frame every year. It is popular for both its high end, celebrity luring products, and its thriftiness come couponing season. The glamour of Macy's has led to it becoming a staple for people from all walks of life, and it is no wonder that many people seek to know more information about it.

Is Macy's high end? Macy's is considered to be a high end retailer. They sell many brands and products only accessible to those of a high income level. With that said, much of their appeal can be attributed to the fact that they sell product lines ranging from very expensive to extremely affordable.

Most department stores cater to customers of less discerning tastes, or who are unable to afford expensive product lines and brands. Macy's is distinctly above these chains in terms of how high end their products are considered to be. While their prices are often quite reasonable, the clientele they attract tend to land within high income brackets. Macy's is considered by business analysts to be on par with Nordstrom and Saks (as in Saks Fifth Avenue) when it comes to the type of customers it attracts.

Is Macy's closing stores? In January 2013, Macy's announced that they would be closing six United States stores. The reason behind the closures was a lack of performance at each location. The stores that were shut down included locations in Las Vegas, Nevada, Pasadena, California, Belmont, Massachusetts, Houston, Texas, Honolulu, Hawaii, and St. Paul, Minnesota. The company insisted that it was not a sign that the company was lessening the amount of its stores in a long term sense. In fact, they are planning to add nine new stores to their chain. The closed-down locations, the company assured the press, were merely operating at a cost too high to justify the low margin of profit they were producing.

The fact that all of the stores that were closed were in downtown locations made some reporters think that Macy's could be developing a business strategy focused on minimizing their downtown presence. Representatives for Macy's cleared up the mistake, saying that it was a coincidence and not part of a larger plan for the brand's growth.

One of the stores that was shut down was not a Macy's specifically, but rather, a Bloomingdales location. Bloomingdale's is owned by Macy's, and it is a merchant of higher-end designs. The price range represented in the product lines of Bloomingdale's are less accessible to middle class and upper middle class customers. This doesn't change the fact that it is a popular tourist destination in many large cities. Even for those who cannot afford to take something home, it can be fun to look around in. It is likely that at least one of the new stores will be a Bloomingdale's, to make up for the Las Vegas store that was shut down.

There is not evidence at this time that there will be further shut downs. Shut downs of small clusters of stores have been popular this year with many chains, but so far there is no reason to worry that these chains will go out of business. Macy's also stands alone in the fact that there are plans being made to replace them with an even higher number of stores. There is no telling at this time where these new store locations will be built, but presumably Macy's will put them in the areas where they believe business will be most profitable. It is also quite possible that they are planning to rebuild some of them in roughly the same areas that the recently shut down stores were in, but this time with store models or building sizes better suited to profitability for those areas.

Is Macy's the largest department store? Macy's is the second largest department store chain in the United States, and possibly the second largest in the world. Its annual rankings sometimes suggest that it could the largest. As for specific Macy's stores, the flagship Macy's in New York City is frequently called "the world's largest department store." The Macy's on State Street in Chicago is referred to as the "second largest department store in the world." Both Macy's locations are official historical landmarks in the cities in which they are located.

The fact that the Manhattan Macy's flagship store is referred to in travel guides as the world's biggest department store is more a nod to the store's rich history than an actual statement of fact. It was the largest department store when it was built in 1902, and it remained such for a very long time after that. However, the title technically belongs to a certain South Korean department store. Shinsegae Centum City, located in the South Korean town of Busan, is 5,487,594.84 square feet.

Macy's is the number one destination for a wide range of goods at varying prices and superior quality. Its rich history has shaped American businesses for generations.
