Fashion Magazine Jobs

While models are the spotlight job of a fashion magazine, there are certainly other jobs that are not as high profile but just as important in making sure the magazine is up to par. Some of these jobs include writers, photographers, and editors. If you have a talent for one of these fields and live in a fashion capital IE Los Angeles, Chicago and New York to name a few, then you might be able to land one of these rewarding jobs.

Models The most well known of these jobs is being a model. Models typically display clothes and accessories in a fashion magazine, usually as part of featured articles or pages. They also do modeling work for the ads displayed in the magazines. Models are typically hired by modeling agencies and the agencies pick the best models for the fashion companies they work with. In the past models were very tall and thin however, in recent years some fashion magazines have featured plus size models as well.

Photographers While models are busy on the runways of the world and gracing the covers of magazines they need photographers to make that happen. Not only are photographers responsible for taking good photos but they are also responsible for thinking outside the box and developing relationships with all sorts of people who work in the industry. They need to have a good sense of business as well, understanding the general ebb and flow of the fashion world and being able to negotiate different types of contracts.

Management Behind each fashion magazine is a management team of movers and shakers responsible for the magazine's creation, all the way from its first brainstorm ideas to the full fledged publication. Some fashion management careers include executive editors, chief editor, advertising directors and photography directors. Each of these people design different jobs to the people underneath them and also take a hand in some of the tasks as well.

Staff Members Just like each fashion magazine needs models and photographers, it also needs its staff of writers and editors. Writers and editors are responsible for providing and editing the content to go along with the photos and cover shots provided by models and photographers. Sometimes fashion magazines will hire freelance writers to write on an as needed basis, especially for an online publication. Other staff positions also include web designers, different types of advertisers from social media to print advertising, and layout assistants.
